Basic Research
Every surgeon is following the studies performed in research facilities hoping that a great break through will be established, which is going to facilitate his daily work and improve his results.
Bridging defects
To bridge successfully defects is perhaps the major problem of peripheral nerve surgery as those will remember who did this kind of surgery already in the fifties or sixties of the last century.
In spite of the fact that the development of a reliable technique of free autografting has changed the situation significantly there are still controversies around some problems. First of all we need much more autografts as donors are available. A true alternative to an autograft which is capable to bridge long defect would be most welcome. In this section we want to know the state of the art in the question of alternatives, in experimental research as well as in clinically proven methods. Surgeons, who advocates alternatives usually argue with the donor site morbidity after harvesting an autograft. How important is the donor site morbidity in reality and how can it be prevented?
The problem of end to side coaptation was discussed exhaustingly in 2008. There were controversial opinions about the clinical outcome. Are there new informations about results and indications?
Brain plasticity plays an increasingly important role in nerve transfers of all kind. Are there new informations in this important subject?
Many surgeons did not yet appreciate the fact, that all tissues in the body, which are not located exactly in the plane of the axis of an adjacent joint must be able to move against each other to avoid deformity. To provide the anatomical basis for such movements gliding tissue, spaces, space filling tissue and fascias to line the spaces must be available. I think this problem should be discussed thoroughly.
Spinal cord lesions and their surgical treatment will always remain a subject of interest.
The last topic about the brachial plexus is especially important to me. I have attended a sequence of symposia on brachial plexus surgery during the last months.
The discussions focus around the question, what peripheral transfers could be done in partial lesions? The main issue seems to be how to avoid a difficult exploration and perform immediately peripheral transfers. I have not heard a solid concept, what to do, if all five roots are avulsed.

Information for the speaker
The reason to organize this symposium is our belief that we can improve the results of our nerve repairs significantly just by applying our present day knowledge. The main subject is therefore: What can we do today?
Beyond this first line we want to consider in what direction research should go to provide new options.
In the third place we want to try to find solutions about controversial issues.
The following topics have been elected as suggestions. We can change this list if other important question are coming up and we are grateful for any suggestion.
Of course the time of our symposium is limited and we have therefore to distribute the precious time carefully.
A great number of important experts have already accepted to contribute to one or more of the topics.
Please, study carefully the list of topics and indicate on which of them you want to contribute. Since we are all familiar with the problems it is not necessary to lose time with introductions etc. A short comment explaining your opinion is sufficient.
A more detailed description of your thoughts should be given in the abstract which will be printed and which every participant will be able to read.
There is also a chance to make your point with a poster. The poster session is especially designed to have an
opportunity to discuss items, which doesn`t fit into the list
of topics, but are so important that they should not be missed.
