Present State of Peripheral Nerve Surgery and how to achieve further improvement

Invitation
When discussing the outcome of peripheral nerve surgery one is confronted with two contrary opinions:
Our results are satisfactory and steadily improving.
Our results are far from being satisfactory.
Both opinions are true. The constant improvement is opposed by a constant rise in our definitions of a satisfactory result.
On the other hand, do we really apply all available beneficial factors to get out the maximum of the regenerative capacities of nerve tissue?
One thing has become clear so far:
The treatment of peripheral nerve lesions is a highly specialized field and covers:
  • The proper election and execution of repair techniques according to the particular situation
  • Considering the environment of the lesioned nerve
  • Considering the balanced between the paralysed muscles and their antagonists
  • Supporting by preventing further damage, physical treatment and reinforcement by synergists if required
  • Exploiting the cerebral plasticit
There are certainly many other small factors which may contribute to a favourable outcome but are overlooked.

To initiate a discussion on such subjects a symposium was organized in March 2006 in Vienna. The symposium was extremely successful.
Encouraged by this success and considering the fact that within two years new informations may be available we invite any interested person - surgeon, neurologist, physiotherapist, basic researcher- to think about new informations in this regard and join us in March 2008 in Vienna.

Information for the speaker
The reason to organize this symposium is our belief that we can improve the results of our nerve repairs significantly just by applying our present day knowledge. The main subject is therefore: What can we do today?
Beyond this first line we want to consider in what direction research should go to provide new options.
In the third place we want to try to find solutions about controversial issues.
The following topics have been elected as suggestions. We can change this list if other important question are coming up and we are grateful for any suggestion.
Of course the time of our symposium is limited and we have therefore to distribute the precious time carefully.
A great number of important experts have already accepted to contribute to one or more of the topics.
Please, study carefully the list of topics and indicate on which of them you want to contribute. Since we are all familiar with the problems it is not necessary to lose time with introductions etc. A short comment explaining your opinion is sufficient.
A more detailed description of your thoughts should be given in the abstract which will be printed and which every participant will be able to read.
There is also a chance to make your point with a poster. The poster session is especially designed to have an
opportunity to discuss items, which doesn`t fit into the list
of topics, but are so important that they should not be missed.
