Outline of scientific content
25 - 35% of patients admitted to a hospital with any diagnosis show also alcohol abuse. In most of these cases the patients also smoke heavily. The course of the disease and the response of many used medications is influenced by alcohol and tobacco intake.
In this conference with approximately 400 experts from many medical areas (internal medicine, cancer units, pharmacology, psychiatry, neurology and from basic research) the following topics will be discussed:
- detection of abuse and dependence
- evidence based medical treatment of withdrawal and relapse prevention
- alcohol and tobacco related diseases
- interactions between substance abuse, medication for the treatment of dependence and medication used for the somatic or psychiatric symptomatology, e. g. ß-blocker, cholesterol reducing drugs., antipsychotic drugs
Main topics will be summarized in symposia and special topics will be presented in posters.
In sessions basic research hypothesis for general mechanisms according to the above mentioned topics will be presented and in sessions with very practical approach evidence based guidelines for treatment procedures will not only be shown but also be trained in practical work. These case management procedures will be trained in workshops.
