Tours Programme

Tours Programme:
Full Day Cava Cellars and Sitges

Friday, 12th September 2008
Duration: 7 hours
Departure: 09.30 hrs. from Palacio de Congresos de Catalunña
Arrival: 16.30 hrs. approx. to Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña

Cava is a generally very high quality sparkling wine made using the “methode champenoise” i.e. a double fermentation which produces champagne-like bubbles. There are several cellars about 30/40 minutes drive south west of Barcelona in the vicinity of San Sadurni de Noia. Amongst the most impressive cellars are those of Codorniu, one of the biggest manufacturers. The buildings where there plant is based were designed by one of Barcelona’s leading Modernist architects in the early 20th century and have been designated a national monument. Upon arrival at the caves the manufacturing process is explained by means of an audio-visual presentation and then a tour of the plant partly by means of a small tractor drawn “train” through the labyrinthine tunnels. There are three trains with a capacity of 36 people on each. Visitors then have the opportunity to taste the produce and to buy some if they like.
On then to Sitges, an elegant and attractive coastal resort located about 35 minutes drive southwards of Barcelona where lunch will be held.
Free time is then allowed in Sitges to wander on the seafront, explore the narrow streets of the old village centre or to take a drink in one of the many bars. The area around the old parish church is particularly attractive with many of the buildings dating from the 17th and 18th century.
Rate per person: 110,00 €, including: bus, English speaking guide, entrance to Codorniu Cellars and lunch Minimum 15 persons required to operate the tour.

THE WORLD OF GAUDI
Saturday, 13th September 2008
Duration: 4 hours
Departure: 09.30 hrs. from Palacio de Congresos de Catalunña
Arrival: 13.30 hrs. approx. to Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña

Gaudí is the most famous of the Modernist architects and his heavy use of bright ceramics and unusual shapes brought the word "gaudy" into the English language. Amongst his leading patrons were the Güell who wanted the park designed as a suburb for 60 new houses. Only two were ever completed but what is in place is a pectacular insight into the mind of this most individual of architects. Sinuous lines, natural forms, broken marble, spiral shaped towers, giant lizards, bright ceramic decoration all combined to create a surreal setting in which one can relax and enjoy a panoramic view of the city.
During the tour you will also visit two marvellous Gaudi's masterpieces: “La Pedrera” (Casa Milà) to admire the interior of this fascinating building where there are extensive interactive exhibits on all of Gaudi’s life and work, the opportunity to go up onto the roof of the building to see the fascinating chimneys and magnificent views and the chance to visit an apartment which has been completely restored to look as it would have done in Gaudi’s era, and the Sagrada Familia, the Gaudi's unfinished masterpiece - a cathedral that consumed all of his time and money in his later years until his death in 1926 but whose construction has inched forward amidst controversy and debate until the present day. Dominating the skyline, this is a Barcelona attraction that should not be missed.
Rate per person: 50,00 €, including: bus, English speaking guide, entrance to La Pedrera and Sagrada Familia Minimum 15 persons required to operate the tour.
